About Jack Daniel’s:
Jack Daniel's Tennessee whiskey is produced in Lynchburg, Tennessee, by the Jack Daniel Distillery, owned by the Brown–Forman Corporation since 1956. In 1864, Jasper Newton Daniel, more commonly known as Jack, introduced the world to Old No. 7, resulting in the establishment of Jack Daniel Distillery in 1866 - the first registered distillery in the US. He learned whiskey-making from Reverend Dan Call and an enslaved man named Nathan “Nearest” Green. Jack would later hire Nearest as the Jack Daniel Distillery’s head distiller. When Tennessee passed a prohibition law in 1910, distilling moved to St Louis, Missouri, and Birmingham, Alabama until those operations were ceased due to the 18th Amendment in 1920. Following the repeal, production restarted in Tennessee in 1938.
The mash for Jack Daniel's is distilled in copper stills. It is then filtered through 10-foot stacks of sugar maple charcoal, a step called "mellowing" (also known as the Lincoln County Process) to remove impurities and the taste of corn. The company argues this extra step makes the product different from bourbon. However, Tennessee whiskey is required to be "a straight Bourbon Whiskey" under terms of the NAFTA and Canadian law.
Tasting Notes and Descriptions:
Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7
Jack Daniel’s Old No 7 starts off with nutty and roasty caramel, vanilla, and roasted oak, followed by cinnamon, clove, toasted banana, red apple, and hints of licorice, grain, and grass. Roasty, oaky, and spicy-forward whiskey with a little body and roundness so it doesn’t feel thin
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select
On the nose, oak, dried dark fruit, complex baking spice, cocoa, leather and some fresh banana bran muffins. On the palate, oak, dried dark fruit, cinnamon, leather, chocolate Necco wafers, banana taffy. Ok balance, medium body, light soft feel.
Jack Daniel’s 10-Years-Old
Jack Daniel’s 10 Years Old Tennessee Whiskey is the first age-stated whiskey released by the distillery in over 100 years. Notes of sweet caramel, brown sugar, and banana flambe lead the way, followed by a pop of caramel, vanilla, and charred oak. On the palate, charred tannic oak, rich dried raisins, and tobacco leaf punch their way to the top. Diving deeper are notes of light sweet corn, burnt caramel, dry leather, and a touch of rye spice.
